Arcology

Text:

Neuromancer, by William Gibson, pg. 6: "Behind the port lay the city, factory domes dominated by the vast cubes of corporate arcolgies."

Definition:

An arcology is a self-contained environment described as an 'entire city in a single building'. The idea was coined by the Italian Architect Paolo Soleri, and although only one prototype arcology exists in the present world, the concept is heavily prevalent in science fiction, such as in the movie Equillibrium. The concept reflects a realization that space may soon be running out on the Earth's surface, specifically in the cities, to house our ever increasing population.
