Transmission by Hari Kunzru. Page 274. "Gabriella Haydon writes that she was looking out her window at the Clansman's Lodge Hotel when a face appeared at it looking 'like Cathy in Wuthering Heights."

Explanation:

Cathy is a nickname for the character Catherine Earnshaw in the dramatic novel Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte, the sister of Charlotte Bronte who became famous for her own work, Jane Eyre. In Wuthering Heights Catherine dies during childbirth, but only because she was suffering from a severe illness at the time. While not her husband, or the father of her child, Catherine's true love Heathcliff is tortured by her death and is haunted by her spirit, which he feels is the other half of his heart. Both he and Catherine always felt they were only half a person, that the other half of themselves was contained within each other, and that if one of them were to die, half of the other would die also. Since Heathcliff was the one who survived Catherine's death he bemoans the loss considerably. One night in a state of sheer panic and terror, though some twenty years have passed since her death, Heathcliff calls out to Catherine from his window into the night, and the face of young Cathy, his playmate from when they were children together, appears to him, haunting his dreams.
