Explanation:
A paradox is a statement that seems self-contradictory but in reality expresses a possible truth. The narrator refers to this observation of Arjun’s as being a paradox because obesity and the real nature of the United States can be seen as paradoxes. The paragraph is describing how Arjun was becoming an expert of learning the class distinctions of the America, a place where Arjun had thought all were classless and equal. The fact that most of the impoverished people in the room were obese is very far from a politically correct statement, but at the same time it does deliver some truth in American culture.
